Quandong cottage, Venus Bay, South Australia

Can 12 days really pass that quickly?  We ventured once again to our favourite fishing haunt, beautiful Venus Bay on South Australia’s far west coast, about 750 km north west of Adelaide.  This time we had a boat in tow, the first boat we’ve ever owned, acquired a few months ago.

Our base this trip was secluded Quandong Cottage on Harbor Point, a few kilometres out of the township.  There’s no mains power here and the cottage is powered solely by wind and solar generated electricity.  And a large gas bottle for cooking and hot water.  The cottage was comfortable and well fitted out, everything worked well, and we shared the nights alone on the peninsula with just a few skittish kangaroos that bounded off whenever they spotted us.  And as for the skies, we’ve never seen so many twinkling stars!

But we hadn’t come to stargaze.  Fishing consumed our waking thoughts and it was early to bed each night to be well rested for the early morning starts and boat launch on the bay.  With a low human population in the area, there’s still fish to be caught and we did just that.  Salmon, mullet, tommy ruff, whiting, garfish, flathead, trevally and snook all succumbed to our craftily presented baits, and there’s no need to guess what our meals consisted of for the fortnight (or will for the next fortnight for that matter).  We took our fish smoker and turned the three large snook we caught (pictured) into delicious smoky lemony morsels.

It’s another world out on the vast expanse of quiet Venus Bay.  Shhh – don’t tell anyone about it.
