Shanghai, China

On Monday we walked through the very interesting Yuyuan Bazaar and Garden, and Shanghai old town. Then it was time for some shopping on Nanjing Mall, and in the evening to Cloud 9 Bar on Level 88 of the Grand Hyatt Hotel for a drink and to see the sort of view that one normally only sees through the small window of a 747. So as not to diminish the night vision of the patrons, the lighting in the Bar is kept very dim and it is difficult to see much inside the Bar itself!

Yesterday we hired a minibus to take us to the canal town of Wuzhen a couple of hours west of Shanghai. This historical town is being restored as a tasteful tourist destination. Strangely for China, there were very few people around that day, and this subtracted somewhat from the atmosphere of the place.

Late this afternoon we flew to Guilin, an area of great natural beauty and one of China’s most popular tourist destinations. We arrived at Guilin just after dark and hired a small minibus to take us into town. But shortly after leaving the airport, an odour of imminent fire swept through the bus. The driver braked and stopped abruptly and we all rushed from the vehicle onto the edge of the highway where we waited until a replacement bus was ordered and arrived. Fortunately the original bus, given the opportunity to cool down, did not catch fire, enabling us to recover our luggage and press on to Guilin, delayed but not burned.
